A Day To Celebrate

Dear Faithful Readers of Fr. McKenna’s Blog – God Is Good.  Our spiritual director and guide turns 98 Years Young today.   He does not know that I have placed this on his website.  All who know him, know how humble he is.  We are so blessed to have him continue his ministry of spreading the Good News to all of us.  His 73 Years as a priest is a testament to his Love for this Jesus of Nazareth – and we are the fortunate ones who can learn from his teachings and stories.

Happy Birthday Uncle George – you are loved beyond measure, and I am so happy my children and grandchildren have known you through their lives!  God Bless

  7. Happy Birthday Fr. George, I hope you have a lovely day. I often think of times past when you visited my Uncle Pat (Corcoran) and Aunt Nancy’s home here in Ireland to see your Aunts Maggie and Bridgie and the extended family members. Remember, you used to give us (the children) 1/2 dollars to get changed into our money for sweets/candy. Your visits were always exciting, sometimes we knew in advance that you were coming and sometimes you just turned up! My dad (John Corcoran) gave you a four leaf shamrock that he found one time for good luck. I hope you still have it. Mary, Ann, Breda, Patricia and myself all follow your blog through email & Facebook. Keep up the good work, and have a very happy day today celebrating with your family. Best Wishes, Imelda, Oliver, Fern & Joshua

  21. Dear Father, I have admired you beyond words. I hope you have a joyous birthday and hope your future holds many more trips around the sun. I am going to say something from my heart. Almost from the first time I met you at Quigley, I knew you were a blessed man. As I grew to know you more I became convinced in my heart that your goodness and kindness could have you included in the company of saints. You are the only priest I have ever known that made me want to be a priest. My life took other roads but I have never nor will I ever forget you, Happy Birthday.

  26. Father McKenna changed my life, as a young boy, 8 or 9 yrs old. I remember him standing outside the doors of the “new” St Barnabas church, after Mass, the snow falling. He was saying goodbye to the parishioners after saying Mass. He radiated kindness, gentleness, goodness and love. Even as a distracted kid I could sense he was truly different.
Looking back I know without a shadow of a doubt that Fr McKenna changed the course of my life that day. God used Fr McKenna to plant a spiritual seed in an 8 yr old boy. He was the first link in a spiritual chain that eventually, 30 plus years later, God used to change my life more than I could ever ask for or imagine.
Happy Birthday, blessed Father! To say you are a blessing is too much an understatement! You are a “priestly priest”, a “priest forever”, a living testament to the power of God in Christ and the Holy Spirit. Your impact and significance in this world cannot be measured. Your Spirit of love echoes in eternity.
Your spiritual son and brother in Christ,
    Brian Egan

  30. I visited Father today and he remembered me, despite the fact that it has been almost 50 years since we’ve seen each other. He even remembered my grandpa, Nick (after whom my older son, Nick Schuetter, is named), who used to open the doors of Christ the King church in Beverly in the 1960s for Father to say the early Mass before he was off to serve as Teacher and Spiritual Director at Quigley South. This man is a saint, as far as I am concerned, and I asked him to pray for Nick, Mike and Maura. I understand that on his walker he had taped a sign which read “Any day now,” reflecting his attitude on life and death. It had been my privilege to have known him as priest, confessor, friend and role model. Before I left I asked him for his blessing and in it he, in turn, thanked God for my visit, leaving me a bit choked up. He still writes a blog (https://fathermckenna.wordpress.com/…/a-day-to-celebrate/) for those who want to listen to his wisdom. AD MULTOS ANNOS, Father!

  32. What a blessing and treasure you are. I met you only once in person at Midway on a Sunday morning. I had had to travel that day and tried everything I could to get to Mass before I left Minnesota, but to no avail. I finally said, “Lord, if you want me to get to Mass, you are going to have to arrange it.” I walked off the plane at Midway to hear the announcement, “Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel on concourse 3.” I hustled to the chapel, laughing all the way, and was privileged to meet Father George…. and purchase his wonderful book. I count that day as what I call a Red X day on the calendar of my life. The red X on the map tells you where the treasure is. Thank you, Father George, for being the faithful and treasured servant that you are, leading all to Jesus. Happy Birthday!
