The Ways To Happiness

Mary (O’Malley) McKenna Happy Mothers’ Day!

Happy Mothers’ Day!

Like many people, I enjoy going through the big book stores.  In these stores, I hope to find the one book for opening the magic door to a more peaceful and joyful living.  In all my years of seeking this much desired book, I have found nothing that comes close for doing this than the Beatitudes of Jesus.  A thumb-nail sketch of seven of the Beatitudes (Matt. 5: 1-12) follows.

Blessed are the poor in spirit, the Master says.  Wish abundance on others in every way, spiritual and material.  Strive to make others successful, in the family circle, at work, and those we meet in life.  Offer encouragement and congratulations!  Always be generous to everyone!  Rejoice at the success of others!

Blessed are the lowly.  Refuse to Lord it over others.  See in others the Image of God.  Lowly (humble) people treat others with respect and reverence as if they were members of royalty.  Everyone we meet carries a card: “Whatever you do for this person, I will consider it as done to Myself.”  Signed – Jesus of Nazareth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for holiness.  Keep telling others, “I am called to be a holy person, one who imitates the Lord Jesus in all ways.  What would Jesus do? This is a good question to ask ourselves often!

Blessed are the pure of heart.  Treasure our precious gift of sexuality.  Our generous God has given us this gift to make sure the human race increases.  Our sexuality influences every fiber and cell of our beings.  Although it is strong and powerful, it is all-holy, all-good.  Modern day life wishes to make it a trivial thing, a toy, a plaything, a way to sell automobiles.  Refuse to fall into that trap!

Blessed are the sorrowing.  Understand that life is full of pain and heartaches from the first breath we take as infants until our last breath on earth.  See in the patient bearing of these heartbreaks chances to grow in closeness to God.  In all hardships, turn immediately to God!

Blessed are the merciful.  Mercy includes all kinds of loving actions.  We are never more like Jesus of Nazareth than when we offer forgiveness, kindness and love to others.  This quality of mercy in Jesus attracted many followers.

Blessed are the peacemakers.  Refuse to argue with others.  If disagreements arise, speak softly, discuss, dialogue.  Talk respectfully!  Jesus came as the Prince of Peace.  We are His disciples.

Today we celebrate our Mothers – some of the closest disciples of Jesus.  Mothers are generous and humble, they feed us and hold us close to their hearts.  They understand the pain of life, are merciful to the end, and are our peacemakers, bringing us closer to Jesus of Nazareth.  God Bless our mothers!

  1. H Fr. George!
Thank you for that beautiful post! I’ve never seen the beatitudes explained in such way – SO meaningful and applicable to every day life – so brilliant! You have a wonderful way with words, and this post was exceptional! I will refer to it often, to be sure.

And thank you for sharing your mom’s picture. She raised a wonderful son and would be SO proud of you and the wonderful way in which you still lead us, your followers, even at this stage of your life. We are so very lucky to have you to teach us with your wonderful blog every week. We only ever have one mother and it is a bittersweet time for those of us who have lost our mothers. I know I am missing my mother so much more this weekend! But, like you, I have wonderful memories of her and thank her for her guidance in raising me to be the responsible and faithful person that I am.

Praying for you daily, Fr. George and thanking God for the wonderful gift that you give to me by always being there for me! I love you, Fr. George!
