God is Good!

Seek the Lord while He may be found!

To Follow The Lord Or Leave Him

Follow GodWe pay a high price for being human beings.  Our physical bodies lie open to all kinds of sickness, some painful and distressing, some terminal.  Our hearts, so sensitive and tender, experience stresses without number, broken relationships, sorrows at deaths of loved ones and disappointments of all varieties.

In response to these possibilities, Jesus says, “Take up your cross and follow me.”  As His followers, we still face all the hardships of life.  We are not spared.  In the Gospels, we read how many turned away from the Lord because of His hard sayings.

“Eat My Body, drink My Blood. . . Love your enemies. . . Do good to those who persecute you.”  These words frightened His listeners.  At times, we face temptations to leave the companionship of the Master because we have many troubles.  “He doesn’t care for us”, we say.

Recently, a good friend of mine said, “Today, I am celebrating my 45th anniversary in this wheelchair!”  Notice, he said “celebrating.”  No despair, no self-pity, just in a matter-of-fact way.  A   few weeks later, as I ate breakfast in a restaurant across the street from a church, through the window I saw my friend as he rolled out from 6:30 am Mass on his motorized cart.

At his van, the side door swung open and a lift put him in the driver’s seat.  He needed no help.  I knew him as a man with a powerful prayer life, but his attendance at daily Mass had escaped me.  What an inspiration for me when I go through some dark days.

Accept the hardships of life in a spirit of prayer.  Pray something like this . . . “Father, I offer these painful hours to You in union with the sufferings of Your Son on the Cross.”  Through adversity, draw closer to Christ.

  2. That says it all! If only we could follow Him as his children with understanding of it all. We would have peace! To know we will be w/Him!
