Seek the Lord while He may be found!

Blueprints For Holiness Of Life

In the summer of 1999 a new parking garage was built to the east of the Midway Airport Terminal.  It was designed to hold 3,000 cars, but months before any construction took place there was nothing but bare ground, and architects had to develop their blueprints.  From these prints, the trades people began to build.  If there were no blueprints, there would have been no building.

Throughout Holy Scriptures, we hear the call we have to holiness.  Some people might begin to say, this call doesn’t refer to me, not with my past poor track record.  It’s too late for me.  Not true!  The call goes out to every human being, still living and breathing.  In other words, we have the commission, through baptism, of building a Cathedral in our hearts, a mighty Church, where prayer, worship and sacrifices are offered to God.

We need blueprints to build this Sacred Place, this Cathedral.  In the life of Jesus of Nazareth, we will find these blueprints, these guidelines to a blessed Way of Living.  Several times while Jesus was on earth, the Father gave visible approval to His Son with words, such as, “This is My Beloved Son!  Listen to Him!”  From early childhood, we have heard the Gospel readings of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, telling of the Life Story of the Messiah, the One sent to show us how to live.

As we face life and its many happenings, we strive to act as the Christ of the Gospels would act.  What would Jesus do . . . a constant question that keeps coming back to our minds.  In saying this, we, like good workers, are going back to the blueprints of the Cathedral and studying them as we build this Consecrated Place within our spirits.

I found this practice helpful in trying to fulfill this call to holiness.  In early morning, or in evening time, I take an image of Christ and speak to Him.  “What kind of Man were you Lord?  I know You were kind, gentle and a loving Person.  I wish to be like You in all that I do!  Please give me the courage to persevere in this work!”

Every Sabbath, Jesus, though He was the God-Man, attended the services in the synagogue, the place of worship in His time.  What a good example for us to think about!  For us, the worship of God every Sabbath must be part of our blueprints for building our Cathedral of holiness!
